5th International Conference on Genocide, California State University, Sacramento, California – USA

The theme of the conference was “Forms of Genocide Across the Globe: Challenges, Responses and Accountability.” Dr. Tharcisse Seminega presented his family’s experiences during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. While a professor at National University of Rwanda in Butare, he, his wife and 5 children were marked for slaughter. He announced the Spring 2019 release of his book “No Greater Love: A Family Bears Witness to the Genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda.”

The Robert H. Jackson Center hosted a two-day event “Canaries in the Coal Mine of Human Rights: Seventy-Five Years After West Virginia v. Barnette” commemorating the 75th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943). Simone Liebster was interviewed by Skype about her experiences as a survivor of Nazi persecution.

The 6th Genocide Awareness Week was held on April 9-14. The Arnold-Liebster Foundation’s presentation “Who Am I? Faith Under Fire” by Renee Ochsner and Kristin Dickman Walter featured a Skype interview with Holocaust-era survivor Simone Liebster in France. 121 attendees visited an exhibit table and viewed the traveling exhibit Who Am I? Young Minds Forced to Choose which is on display in the Student Center through April 30.
