High-ranking officials, scientists, and other professionals who considered themselves good, law-abiding citizens were later convicted for Nazi war crimes. Others, however, refused to violate their conscience and the very principles which madethemexemplary citizens. A Skype interview with one such survivor, Simone Liebster, was a highlight of this presentation.
Photo

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, University of Massachusetts Boston – USA

Non-Jewish Victims of the Third Reich, a four-week course for adult learners, was offered during Fall Semester 2010 and facilitated by Janet Lemus. A focus of the course was Simone Arnold Liebster’s story as related in her memoir Facing the Lion: Memoirs of a Young Girl in Nazi Europe, highlighting choices and consequences of individual decisions. Discussing that some core values must be non-negotiable offered a look at the enormity of facing an entire nation’s value system. This provided a segue into current issues that face humans of all ages. The course finished with an interactive Skype conference with Simone Liebster on October 14th. One participant commented afterward: “This course opened my eyes to how easy evil can spread around the world. I will try and teach my grandchildren to think, analyze before making any life decisions that will affect their future… I will never forget the lessons of standing up for one’s beliefs.”

Video Conferences and Resources Teacher Workshop, Alabama – USA

This workshop was held on July 26, 2010 at Alabama State University in Montgomery. Leonita Nelson, workshop presenter and 5th grade teacher with Montgomery Public Schools, demonstrated how to use video conferences to integrate technology in the classroom. Educators had an opportunity to interview Simone Arnold Liebster from France through a live Skype interview, focusing on the value of using her testimony to help students understand the importance of adhering to one’s conscience and taking a stand for what is right.

Jehovah’s Witnesses Stand Firm: Choice vs. Consequence Workshop, South Carolina – USA

This workshop was presented on July 14, 2010 as part of a five-day Holocaust and Human Behavior seminar presented by Facing History and Ourselves and South Carolina Council on the Holocaust at Columbia College.
